LINKING surplus with needs diverts useful items and materials from the waste stream, plus creates jobs in logistics & repairs.

You shampoo because HAIR collects oil.  Help us gather clippings from salons and pet groomers. We felt fibers into mats that soak up oil spills.

COMPOSTING grazed rangelands boosts photosynthesis, pulling more carbon out of the air and returning it back into the soil.

Our Programs

We have 7 departments:

(1) Hair Matters is our global hair-mats-for-oil-spills project where we felt waste fibers into mats that soak up petrochemicals.

(2) Eco-Industrial Hub with model factory and exhibit hall is in the SoMa district of San Francisco.

(3) Eco-Home and urban edible garden with planet-friendly, immersive tours and field trips.

(4) The Hum Sum – for Humanity Adding Solutions our environmental social media platform, where everyone can share ecological posts and research.

(5) Eco-Academy – Our Youth and Eco-Education Program includes internships, apprenticeships and green careers for all ages.

(6) The WALOP – Worthy Actionable List of Projects through 2050 – researching, organizing and implementing solutions that nurture healthy air, soil, water, energy and life.

(7) Administration – We open-source all of our back-end processes because we believe that public charities should have transparent, combined or replicable systems that help each other to save funds and time.

Alongside ecologists Noah Teller and Lew Stringer, Matter of Trust is working to  restore the Presidio of San Francisco using hair mulch for soil regeneration. “What we know about the hair is that it’s full of nitrogen and that it’s locked up in the keratin that is in part of our hair. ABC 7 NEWS - SF ECOLOGISTS TESTING HUMAN AND ANIMAL HAIR TO HELP GROW PLANTS IN PRESIDIO
our flagship eco industrial hub in SF is like a test kitchen for hair mats. We are also in constant contact with all of our global partner hubs for their discoveries and updates as well. (flash to image of the latest map) Each mat is made of two 80cm x 60cm Scrims weighing 100g (they are the mat’s bottom and top layers) After its first run through, we then add extra hair to any of the bald patches left on the scrims. They sandwich the Filler which is 600grams of hair, fur, wool, fleece… (1” - 4” long). (Oz and inches grams cm) First we sort a lot of hair into bags to have a stock pile that is debris free and the right lengths. We use a scale to measure out 100grams of 4+ inch (10cm+) long hair for scrims and make many “long hair bags”. Next, we measure out lots of bags with 600grams of hair, fur, wool, fleece… between 1-4 inches (3-10cm), for the middle filler. Now it’s time to start putting the hair into the machine! To make scrims… Lay out an evenly spread layer of 100 grams of 4”+ hair over an area of 60cm wide by 80cm long. We do the first scrim run through the machine, then we add hair to any of the “bald” spots to create a solid scrim and run through the machine again. We make many scrims in a row to have a stock pile in an even number as each mat needs 2 scrims. Then we add filler. We lay out a 60 cm x 60 cm in the center of the 60 x 80cm, leaving 10 cm of scrim exposed border edges on each side. Then we flip It over, turn it 90 degrees and repeat with the other 2 sides We then fold over the extra on the side to create a nice sandwiched mat with finished edges, which we run through the machine again. And there you have it!
